How long have you been the subject leader?


I have been the Design and Technology Subject Leader for 2 years.

What are your strengths as Design and Technology subject leader?

As the Design and Technology Subject Leader I ensure that the curriculum is broad and balanced throughout the school and wherever possible the curriculum is enriched with hands on opportunities, visits and visitors. It is important that there is a clear progression of skills and knowledge taught throughout the school and that the curriculum reflects the needs and interests of the school community. I make sure wherever possible links are made to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and that the curriculum is supported by high quality CPD.


Give examples of the impact you have had on the quality of teaching and learning/ standards?

I have carried out work scrutiny, lesson observations and pupil interviews. I have then given feedback to the class teachers and we have discussed the quality of teaching and learning.

What are the key strengths in this subject?


A broad and balanced curriculum is taught throughout the schools and a range of new skills are taught and developed in each year group.


What areas for development have you identified in this subject?


I have identified that I need to ensure that the children in Key Stage 2 have the opportunity to prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques. I hope to make links with the local secondary school in order to develop opportunities.


How do you know how well pupils are achieving?


I regularly monitor the work that is carried out in Design and Technology and the skills that are being taught. The monitoring shows that the children are making the expected progress with some children in each year exceeding the expectations.


How does the school meet the needs of all groups within this subject?


When carrying out Design and Technology activities and tasks the children have the opportunity to work by themselves, in pairs and in small groups. The children are always supported by a class teacher or teaching assistant.

What knowledge do Governors have about your subject? How have they been involved in your subject?

The Governors are invited to watch class assemblies and observe lessons during our schools ‘Wider Curriculum Open Mornings’ where they can see how D & T is taught in different year groups.


The Governors are also invited to a D & T presentation every two years.
